Coastal groundwater systems: mapping chloride distribution from borehole and geophysical data

چکیده
Abstract Information on chloride (Cl) distribution in aquifers is essential for planning and management of coastal zone groundwater resources as well simulation validation density-driven models. We developed a method to derive concentrations from borehole information helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) data the aquifer Elbe-Weser region where observed electrical conductivity reveal that horizontal salinity not uniform does correlate with coastline. The integrated approach uses HEM resistivity data, petrography information, grain size analysis samples estimate Cl distribution. approch straightforward due complex nature geology clay silt are present. Possible errors uncertainties involved at different steps discussed.

3d Groundwater Mapping in Denmark Based on Calibrated High-resolution Airborne Geophysical Data
Denmark occupies a total area of some 43,000 km. Most of the c ountry consists of Quaternary deposits overlying Cretaceous chalk, limestone, and Tertiary sand and clay. The topography is low-lying, reaching a maximum of 172 m above sea level. The combination of lo w topography and widespread, consolidated, and unco nsolidated aquifers ensures a plentiful and easily accessible water resource. Gr...
متن کاملBorehole Geophysical Logging in Unconsolidated Sediments
Over the last two decades, several advances have been made in the development and application of slim-hole geophysical sondes for use in groundwater, engineering, and environmental applications. This equipment is commonly used to provide qualitative (but detailed) estimates of grain size, sediment type, porosity, density, pore-water salinity, as well as bulk and shear moduli, to supplement geol...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of groundwater model hydrostratigraphy from airborne electromagnetic data and lithological borehole logs
Large-scale hydrological models are important decision support tools in water resources management. The largest source of uncertainty in such models is the hydrostratigraphic model. Geometry and configuration of hydrogeological units are often poorly determined from hydrogeological data alone. Due to sparse sampling in space, lithological borehole logs may overlook structures that are important...

238 C geophysical methods are increasingly used to estimate hydrogeologic properties of the unsaturated zone. Th ese methods provide high-resolution in situ information for large support volumes of the subsurface with minimal intrusion and thereby have obvious advantages over other more traditional methods such as neutron probe and time domain refl ectrometry. In particular, cross-borehole elec...

A multidisciplinary study involving hydrogeochemical sampling and borehole geophysics was undertaken to study the nature and occurrence of saline groundwater on two islands in British Columbia, Canada. Saturna and Hornby Islands are located at the south and north ends, respectively, of the Canadian Gulf Islands situated off the lower mainland of British Columbia. Two large-scale geochemical sam...
